Quentin Amendi – Class of 2011-Convenience Advertising in Melbourne, Australia
“In Makini I learnt that honesty and a heart-to-heart talk is the best way to strengthen a relationship, principles I live by daily,” says our Alumni Quentin Amendi.
Being in Makini was just a great experience. From having ‘stomach aches’ in the morning to waiting for the last bell to ring, the eight hours of school every day seemed like they’d never end, but they did. Now that I think of school, I only remember the fun I had. Like sitting on the back bench to sleep during history class and asking someone tall to ‘cover’ us. I remember opening our lunch boxes in the second period because the lunch hour seemed so far away.
Hard to select one memory but I think one of my best memories was reviving rugby with the lads. Those Saturday games molded us into men and I’ll never forget how we ran to the pitch during our lunch breaks to play.
My best teacher was Mr. Okanga this is because although I never studied art in high school, Mr. Okanga always motivated me to succeed and treated his students like his own children. Every morning he would let my friends and I study in his art studio before classes began.
Interestingly, he focused on our interests rather than how serious we were about studying. In addition, he always talked about the philosophy of life and made us think outside the box. He often told us that honesty and a heart-to-heart talk is the best way to strengthen a relationship, principles I live by daily.
I am so grateful for the time I was in Makini and for the amazing faculty that are continuing to do excellent work. To live and study in such a creative, interdisciplinary atmosphere for years was life-changing.
